A Bedtime Thanks
Rick Allen

Liam snuggled into bed as Dad opened his favorite book.

“Once upon a time, a little squirrel found the biggest acorn ever,” Dad read.

“But he shared it with his friends.” Each friend thanked him for the gift. Liam’s eyes widened.

“That was nice of him!” Dad smiled. “What are you grateful for today?”

Liam thought for a moment. “My toys… and my sandwich… and you, Daddy.” Dad hugged him tightly. “I’m grateful for you, buddy.”

As Liam drifted to sleep, he whispered, “Thank you for my stories and dreams.” From then on, bedtime always ended with a little gratitude.

Discussion Starters for Parents and Kids

  • What is one thing you were thankful for today?
  • How can we show gratitude to friends or family in small, everyday ways?
  •  Why do you think the squirrel shared the big acorn?
  • How does saying “thank you” make you feel inside?

Take-Home Idea:

Create a “Gratitude Moment” before bed. Each night, share one thing you appreciated that day. This habit builds empathy, strengthens bonds, and helps children end the day on a positive note.
