Marzi and Petalhop's Meadow of Thanks
CJ Coop

The first sun after a week of rain spilled across the Meadowlands.

Drops of water clung to every blade of grass, sparkling like tiny lanterns.

Marzi the meerkat stepped from her burrow and breathed in the sweet air.

All around her, neighbours hurried.

Bees zigzagged to refill their hives.

Mice dragged fallen twigs for their nests.

Birds darted overhead with bits of ribbon and moss.

Marzi watched the rush.

“So many wonders,” she whispered, “and no one is stopping to see them.”

A soft giggle came from a patch of tall clover.

Petalhop bounced out, her tail glowing faintly.

She held a garland of fresh petals.

“I’m thanking the meadow,” she said. “It kept us safe through the storm.”

Marzi smiled. “Then let’s thank it together.”

They walked to the wide clearing where the grass shone like green glass.

Bees zipped past without a glance.

Mice scurried, noses down.

A sudden gust of wind scattered the mice’s bundle of twigs.

The little creatures squeaked in alarm as their hard work tumbled across the field.

“Stop a moment,” Marzi called.

“Let’s help before we hurry on.”

Petalhop laid her blossom garland in the center of the clearing.

“Join us,” she said, voice bright but gentle.

One by one the meadowfolk paused.

A sparrow swooped to gather twigs.

Bees steadied fallen flowers with their wings.

Even the shyest mouse carried a stick to the pile.

As they worked, the sun slid higher.

The storm-washed flowers opened wide, filling the air with sweet scent.

Creatures who had rushed now lifted their heads to look.

“It’s beautiful,” whispered a young hare.

Petalhop’s tail glowed brighter.

Marzi pulled smooth stones from her pouch and handed them out.

“Thank-you stones,” she explained. “To remember this moment.”

Neighbours exchanged soft words of gratitude—thanks for helping paws, thanks for clear skies, thanks for the meadow itself.

The day stretched into a warm, golden afternoon.

Marzi and Petalhop stood side by side, listening to the gentle buzz and chirp around them.

“Appreciation turns ordinary hours into treasure,” Marzi said.

Petalhop nodded, her glow steady. “And the more we share it, the brighter it grows.”

The meadow seemed to agree, rustling its leaves in a quiet song of thanks.
